GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION

This safety sensitive (SS) position is responsible for maintaining and overseeing the city cemeteries, urban parks and assisting in the maintenance of other Parks department facilities.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Problem-solving customer service responsibilities dealing with both citizens and employees in enforcing appropriate regulations. This duty is performed as needed.                                    

2. Responsible for assigned park facilities, equipment and vehicle. This duty is performed daily.

3. Works closely with other City employees and citizens to provide as safe environment for users of the facility. This duty is performed daily.

4. Assists in and delegates preparation of cemeteries for funerals and holidays. This duty is performed as needed.

5. Assist in and delegates mowing of grounds to ensure the cemeteries are always presentable and ready for funerals and the public. This duty is performed as needed.

6. Assists in and delegates proper fertilization, irrigation, and drainage to ensure proper maintenance of grounds. This duty is performed daily.

7. Welcomes visitors, assists grieving families, sells cemetery plots, and answers incoming telephone calls. This duty is performed as needed.

8. Notifies patrons and funeral homes of schedules and cemetery requirements. This duty is performed as needed.

9. Acquire necessary equipment and supplies for facility adhering to established City procedures. This duty is performed as needed.

10. May receive, store and issue equipment and supplies. This duty is performed as needed.

11. May monitor visitors to cemeteries to ensure orderly conduct. This duty is performed as needed.

12. Keeps cemetery records and locates grave spaces. This duty is performed as needed.

13. Performs supervisory duties such as delegating tasks to seasonal workers. Duties include, working

with seasonal workers to make sure tasks are being completed, disciplining and praising employees,

problem solving, maintaining some employee records. This duty is performed daily.

14. Operates backhoe, mowers and hand tools. This duty is performed as needed.

15. May be required to conduct simple business transactions involving cash. This duty is performed as needed.

16. Responsible for the maintenance of the park grounds and facilities. Must respond to work orders generated by citizen request, city administration, and parks administration. Duties include, but are not limited to: pruning, mowing, weed eating, digging, planting, trail building, cleaning facilities, raking

leaves, painting, sweeping, and edging. This duty is performed daily.

17. Operating a city vehicle is required for the essential functions.

18. Other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty mentioned satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Broad knowledge of such fields as accounting, marketing, business administration, finance, etc. Equivalent to a four year college degree, plus 3 years related experience and/or training, and 12 to 18 months related management experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Ability to effectively communicate information and respond to questions in person-to-person and small group situations with customers, clients, general public and other employees of the organization.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

 

CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of known variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram formats.

 

REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Certified back hoe operator, valid driver’s license, and chemical applicators license.

Supervises a small group (1-3) of employees in the same or lower classification. Assigns and checks work; assists and instructs as required, but performs same work as those supervised, or closely related work, most of the time. Content of the work supervised is of a non-technical nature and does not vary in complexity to any great degree.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR FUNDS, PROPERTY and EQUIPMENT

Occasionally responsible for organization's property where carelessness, error, or misappropriation would result in moderate damage or moderate monetary loss to the organization. The total value for the above would range from $150,000 to $1,000,000.

 

ACCURACY

Probable errors would normally not be detected in succeeding operations and could possibly affect organization-patron relationship, involve re-work, or additional expenditures in order to properly resolve the error. The possibility of such errors would occur quite frequently in performance of the job. May also cause inaccuracies or incomplete information that would be used in other segments of the organization as a basis for making subsequent decisions, plans, or actions.
