GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION

This safety sensitive position (SS) purpose is to drive a commercial rated rear loading refuse truck along residential routes to collect refuse and recycling.

 Minimum Qualifications

  • No experience is necessary, but is preferred.
  • Requires a Class B CDL with air brakes.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to read, understand and follow policies, safety rules and instructions. 
  • A successful Drug Screen and Background Check.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Inspects truck prior to leaving on route to ensure that it is properly cleaned, serviced, and fueled. This duty is performed daily.

2. Drives a reload refuse truck along a route to collect refuse; transfers refuse to a landfill. This duty is performed daily.

3. Empties refuse into the truck. This duty is performed daily.

4. Performs such routine maintenance and minor repairs on the truck. This duty is performed daily.

5. Cleans truck inside and out. This duty is performed daily.

6. Basic customer service responsibilities dealing with citizens and City employees in performing assigned duties. This duty is performed as needed.

7. Drives pickup truck and trailer along residential route for picking up recycling. This duty is performed daily.

8. Attend safety training and other classes as directed. This duty is performed as needed.

9. May have oversight of sanitation workers assigned to route. This duty is performed as needed.

10. Operating a city vehicle is required for the essential functions.

11. Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty mentioned satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Mental alertness and adaptability to office and field area work routines. Equivalent to four years high school or GED, with particular emphasis during high school in office skills, shop skills, or others, plus 0 to 6 months related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Ability to read and understand documents such as policy manuals, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide numbers. Ability to perform these mathematical skills using money and other forms of measurement.

 CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS

Ability to use common sense understanding in order to carry out simple multi-step instructions. Ability to deal with standardized situations with limited variables.
